SAMs Availablility

At its May 2008 meeting, the American Board of Pathology voted to waive Part II MOC requirements for SAMs through 2009. Diplomates with time-limited certificates are still required to obtain an average of 35 CME credits per year. The ABP encourages all diplomates to participate in SAMs where these are available in your area of practice and if you take CME with SAMs credits, you may of course submit these as part of your Part II requirement. However, you will not be required to submit SAMs as part of your MOC requirements until 2010.

Please do not send in transcripts of your CME activities for 2006-2008. By the time these are due, we hope that you will be able to report them electronically. If not, we will post a form for you to complete and return via e-mail.

ASCP has information regarding their e-courses which qualify as SAMs and other SAMs offerings on its web site in the Maintenance of Certification section. CAP is still working on their SAMs offerings. USCAP has the most extensive offering of SAMs at this time and a link is available to these from their home page. They will be adding a large number of on-line SAMs courses if they have not done so already.

The ABP anticipates that electronic reporting of CME and SAMs will be available by the end of 2008. If it is not, we will post a form that can be downloaded, completed, and mailed in.
