Processing Applications

Processing an application takes from 6 to 8 weeks. The procedure for processing applications includes the following steps:
  1. The application is reviewed to determine whether the information is complete, all required documents are included, and the fee is enclosed. If the application is not complete or not accompanied by the application fee, it may be returned to the candidate, or the missing items will be requested. An application will not be processed until all items have been received.

  2. A letter is sent to the candidate acknowledging receipt of the application. A receipt for the fee is also sent.

  3. An evaluation form is sent to the director of the program in which the candidate completed training, and reference forms are sent to other listed references. Candidates should ask program directors and references to complete and return the forms promptly. An application without the evaluation and reference forms will not be processed further.

  4. The Credentials Committee reviews the application after the evaluation form and all reference forms have been returned to the ABP.

  5. A letter is sent to the candidate regarding board qualification. The maximum period of board qualification is 3 years for candidates who complete training prior to January 1, 2008, and 5 years for candidates completing training after January 1, 2008. A candidate will not be admitted to an examination unless declared qualified by the Credentials Committee.

  6. The ABP does not recognize a status of or use the term “board eligible.”
